Report: 10 percent of Ohio children have a parent in prison
Millions of American children suffer the consequences of their parents’ prison sentences and the nation’s tough-on-crime practices, according to a new report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
“Where the criminal-justice system sees a convicted criminal, a child only sees mommy or daddy,” said Renuka Mayadev, executive director of Children’s Defense Fund-Ohio.
According to the latest available numbers cited in the report, more than 5 million children nationwide, including 271,000 in Ohio, had experienced the separation from a parent because of incarceration — whether it was several nights in jail or years in prison, the report found.
