Hopewell Health Center Hosts Welcome Baby Community Event

Hopewell Health Center in Athens hosted the second monthly Welcome Baby event, January 13, 2017. Sponsored by Help Me Grow, the event is geared towards new and pregnant mothers as a way to help them get acquainted with the children service professionals within their community and raise awareness for parenting resources and support available to them. The event is held in partnership with Early Childhood Programs of HHC, WIC, Athens City-County Health Department, COAD, Integrated Services HMG Home Visiting, Athens County Family and Children First Council and Early Head Start.

Welcome Baby offers activities for mothers to do with their children, with the Hopewell offices being converted into different stations. The stations range from play areas and stuffed animal making, to baby weigh ins, and recipes for simple, nutritious snacks and meals. Help Me Grow Outreach Coordinator Misty Tigner carries a camera around the event taking photos for an album that each mother gets, so that they can see how their child is growing as they continue to attend Welcome Baby.

“You’ll see Misty taking pictures and giving them to parents to put into this album. It’s to see their baby grow over time and for us to be able to say, ‘Look at you. Look at all the amazing work you’re doing as a mom,” said Erin Lucas of Hopewell Health Centers and co-creator of Welcome Baby.

The event also serves as a chance for health professionals from different organizations to meet to discuss issues their own groups are focusing on and to share their own upcoming events.

“If our people could start to see faces, and if we could start to talk better on a more regular basis, it would make make it easier for families to access services,” said Lucas. “So the idea was to introduce people to different faces from agencies in a fun way.”

Welcome Baby is held at Hopewell Health Center the second Friday of every month. The next event will be held 9:30-11:00 Friday, February 10. Hopewell also hosts Doodlebugs, an annual art club for newborns and toddlers that meets at area libraries three times monthly. Doodlebugs will be held 10:30-12:30 Wednesday, February 8 at The Plains Library, 11:30-1:30 Monday, February 20 at Nelsonville Library and 10:30-12:30 Wednesday, February 22 at Glouster Library.
